Walking through Nanliao

Yongsheng Ice Factory is a large ice-making facility that still exists in Nanliao today. Due to the replacement of Nanliao Fishing Harbor by the later Hsinchu Fishing Harbor, the ice factory lost its function of providing ice. It was originally going to be demolished, but with the efforts of local residents, it was preserved. Originally named Sanlong Ice Factory, Yongsheng Ice Factory rose with the opening of Nanliao Fishing Harbor in 1959. At that time, when fishing boats needed ice, they would use iron ox carts to transport it from the city to the harbor, but it was time-consuming and labor-intensive, and most of the ice would have melted by the time it arrived. Therefore, in 1961, the Huang brothers, who lived by the fishing harbor, built Sanlong Ice Factory, using underground wells for water and mechanized cooling to make ice.
